The HIV prevention at schools - this is aimed at boys, girls and teenagers who are in the school age belonging to the public and private sector at the Nueva Esparta State, with the purpose of delaying the beginning of their sexual activity considering this turns into a factor increasing the risk of HIV infection due to the lack of information and disregard of efficient prevention methods in these age groups

Issues: HIV Prevention at schools. The lack of information, social values.
Description: Nowadays, the official statistics indicate the existence of 83 cases of children and adolescents living with HIV/AIDS between 0 and 19 years old as a result of a social structure characterized by the existence of dysfunctional families, the lack of communication between parents and children, the lack of values and the necessity of affection.
The activities has been carried out from January 21 2009 at 14 schools, with a participation of 4500 students from 4th, 5th and 6th grade of elementary school.
This project is about the first phase of a long term process to lay the foundations to its posterior evaluation and monitoring, allowing consequently, the definition of specific actions in relation to the achieved results, said issue could not has been possible until now due to the lack of the required information.
Lessons learned: The school population in private schools has an idea of the topic, they are interested and participate in an active way, while students at the public schools have no idea about the topic and they do not participate too much. The use of an adequate terminology for each participant age group. Selection of appropriated images and graphics for each age group. Didactic management of the topic. There was no recorded background information of similar experiences in the visited schools.
Next steps: Creation of a community network to strengthen the national response to the HIV and AIDS. Inclusion of the talks into the annual academic school Schedule through integral educational community programs. Expansion of the prevention talks on HIV aimed at all the municipalities at the Nueva Esparta State. Extension of the prevention talks on HIV to the level of middle and high school.
