WEAB01 Malignancies in PLHIV

This session had presentations which showed the profile and pattern of malignancies that occurred in HIV infected persons in the US, France and in Romania. All these presentations highlighted the higher prevalence of non-AIDS defining malignancies and mainly linked to infectious etiology. Also the presentations showed there is no major effect of HAART in the occurrence malignancies. It is evident from these presentations that cancer screening should be implemented in HIV infected persons as standard of care to reduce cancer related morbidity.

WEAB0101 The burden of cancer among HIV infected in the US

Engels, et al presented the spectrum and pattern of malignancies among HIV infected persons in the US. Non AIDS malignancies are on the rise, even at higher D4 counts despite on HAART.

WEAB0102    AIDS related malignancies in teenagers horizontally infected with HIV during infancy.

Florentine Dumitrescu et al from Romania did a retrospective review of AIDS related malignancies from a cohort of teenagers between 2000 and 2009. 3.5% had AIDS defining malignancies with mean age of 15. 62% had NHL and the average time to develop neoplasia from HIV diagnosis is 6.3yrs. 12 patients died and mainly due to NHL.

WEAB0103    Lack of regression of anal squamous intraepithelial lesions and anal HPV infections despite immune restoration under cART.

Christopher Piketty et al from France presented the Valpraiso study. Anal cytology and HPV DNA testing were carried out in a cohort of 94 HIV+ MSM who initiated on HAART. This study showed there is no effect of ART on the incidence of HPV.

WEAB0104    CD4 count trajectories of HIV infected women in North America with cervical cancer after initiating ART.

Alison Abraham, et al from Johns Hopkins on behalf of NA-ACCORD presented the profile of women who developed invasive cervical cancer from a cohort of 110,000 HIV infected women enrolled in NA ACCORD IeDEA database. The study participants are from 13 cohorts in North America. This is nested case control study. Women who had lower CD4 counts had higher incidence of invasive cervical cancer and this was not associated with viral load levels.

WEAB0105    Earlier age at cancer diagnosis and increased incidence of non AIDS defining cancers n patients with advanced HIV.

Nguyen, et al from the US presented data from SEER registry from 6 cities in the US (Atlanta, Detroit, LA, San Francisco, San Jose and Seattle). This was a retrospective study conducted from the data collected between 2000 and 2007. 8300 patients were enrolled in this study and among this 512 patients had cancer diagnosis. 192 had Non AIDS malignancies and 320 had AIDS defining malignancies. Among Non AIDS malignancies, lung cancer and among AIDS defining Kaposi’s sarcoma was the most common one. High incidence of Non AIDS defining malignancies were reported in this cohort and it is linked to infectious etiology. Anal squamous cell carcinoma had a risk of 68 times in HIV infected population as compared to general population. This presentation concluded with a message that cancer screening should be implemented in HIV infected at an early age.
